The Holy Eucharist

Holy Mass is celebrated every Sunday at 10:00 a.m., and every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. during the school year, and 10am when school is out.  Holy Mass is celebrated on feasts as announced on the homepage under "Schedule", and via Zion News, The Zion Trumpet bi-monthly newsletter, our weekly Bulletin, and our Social Media Pages.

Holy Absolution

Father Braden is available for private absolution (as taught in Luther's Small Catechism) every Saturday after Matins until 10:00 a.m., and by appointment. All confessions are kept in strictest confidence.

Daily Prayer

The Office of Matins (Morning Prayer) is prayed Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8:45 a.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Incarnation. Matins is not prayed on days there is a morning Mass. The Office of Vespers (Evening Prayer) is prayed every Thursday at 6:00pm or 7:00pm in the Church, frequently on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m., and on feast days as announced. A schedule is available by calling the church office at (313) 894-7450, or by email at church@ziondetroit.org.

Sunday School

Sunday School is held Sunday after Mass, September to May, for children ages 3-12. Instruction is offered on two levels, for the very young and for older children. Lessons focus on the Gospel reading appointed for the Sunday, on the Holy Liturgy, and on the liturgical significance of the Sundays of the Church Year.

Catechesis

Catechesis is "Instruction in the Christian Faith." Catechesis begins when one inquires about membership in the Evangelical-Lutheran Church; it continues in various forms throughout the life of a Christian.

Those desiring membership at Zion Church are asked to speak with the Pastor. In order to receive the Lord's Supper, instruction in the Christian faith according to the Scriptures and Luther's Small Catechism is necessary. There is no fee or obligation for instruction.

Those who are already members of Zion mature and deepen in their understanding of the faith and their love for the Lord and neighbor by attending Holy Mass and, as schedules permit, partaking of one or more of the following forums for learning by ongoing catechesis:

Adult Bible Class, held Sunday after Mass in the undercroft; and Wednesday after Mass in the Rectory.

The Zion Mens' Group, an in-depth study for Zion members and guests. The Zion Mens' Group is currently studying the Chemnitz’s Two Natures.  The Men's Group meets twice a month, once on a Tuesday and once on a Thursday at 7pm. Each meeting begins with Vespers in the Church. Gemuetlichkeit, including conversation and refreshments, begins around 8:30pm.

The Zion Ladies' Group, an in-depth study for Zion members and guests. The Zion Ladies' Group meets every other Saturday, at 1pm. Meetings begin with Vespers in the Chapel of the Holy Incarnation. Refreshments and conversation follow each meeting.

Youth Catechesis, for Grades 3-8 preparing to receive the Lord's Supper, meets Saturday at 10am in the Rectory.

Adult Catechesis meets once a week in the Rectory as announced in the weekly bulletin, usually Thursday evenings at 7pm.

Office Hours

The Parish Office, located on the ground level of the Rectory (south of the church), is open from 9am-1pm, Monday through Friday. Fr. Braden is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Visitation of the Hospitalized and Homebound

The pastor regularly visits those members of the parish who are hospitalized or homebound. Visitation includes Scripture readings, prayers and the Lord's Supper. Please contact the parish office if you know of someone in need of pastoral visitation.
